Malls used to be the go-to locations for not just shopping, but hanging out with friends. Those days are long gone as another mall in Illinois has announced a permanent closing date in March after 43 years in business.

As a child of the 70's and 80's, I vividly remember meeting friends at the Illinois mall near where I grew up. Many a quarter was spent in the arcade inside it back during those days. The news of another Illinois mall closing in March is another reminder that era is long gone now.

The Daily Herald is reporting that the Spring Hill Mall in West Dundee, Illinois will close forever on March 22, 2024. The report is based on letters sent to tenants in the mall that revealed their month-to-month leases will be terminated and the mall will be shut down on that date.

It's sadly not much of a surprise as the Spring Hill Mall has been very sparsely populated for some time now.

Many of the areas where stores used to be were more or less gated with no activity inside.

It didn't used to be this way. Wikipedia says that the Spring Hill Mall opened to much fanfare in October of 1980 when the mall opened its doors with Carson Prairie Scott as one of the anchor stores. It was joined by a JC Penney in 1983. That store would eventually close in 2011 which was the beginning of the end for this once busy mall.

After March 22, 2024, the rest will be closed now, too. Thanks for the memories, Spring Hill Mall in West Dundee, Illinois. Your era was a great one while it lasted.
