Intense Temps in Illinois Means You Should Know the Signs of Heat Stroke or Exhaustion
Extreme heat is nothing to play around it and can be downright deadly. Of course, the latter is on the extreme side of the topic but it is still nothing to take lightly.
As indicated above it is still summer in Illinois and with the heat index, it is going to be nasty.
I could make plenty of jokes about deodorant but I believe there is a time and place for that and dropping a "b.o." joke would the pits. The National Weather Service in Chicago wants us all to know the signs of heat-related medical issues.
It doesn't matter your age, how strong you are, or how tough you are, heat stroke and heat exhaustion can affect anyone.
HEAT EXHAUSTION vs HEAT STROKE, AND WHAT TO DO
First, let's highlight heat exhaustion, here are the signs for you to be aware of:
- Feeling faint or dizzy
- Cool, pale, clammy skin
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Muscle cramps,
- Rapid or weak pulse
In this scenario, you or the person suffering should immediately move to a cool, air-conditioned space, drink water, and use cold compresses or take a cool shower.
When it comes to heatstroke, here are the signs to be aware of:
- Throbbing headache
- Cofusion
- Not sweating
- Red, hot, dry skin,
- Body temp of 103+
- Rapid, strong pulse
- Loss of consciousness
If you see someone suffering from any of these CALL 9-1-1, then move them to a cooler place, cool them with a wet cloth or bath, do not give anything.
