The Hidden Reason Your Illinois Electric Bill Is Going Up
Does your electric bill keep going up each month even though you aren't using any more electricity than normal? It's not inflation or Illinois taxes' fault, it's AI technology's.
Bills Illinoisans Hate to Pay the Most
I think most people will agree that the worst part of adulting is paying bills, but is there one bill that you hate paying the most?
For me, paying our mortgage is the worst, primarily because of the ever-rising cost of property taxes in our escrow.
Speaking of ever-rising prices: have you noticed increases on your electric bill that you don't think you can blame on air conditioning use? You're not alone, and we have AI technology to thank for it.
AI Responsible for Increased Energy Prices in Illinois
More and more Illinoisans are hopping on the AI bandwagon to make life easier every single day, and now we're starting to pay for it, literally.
A recent article from Business Insider says:
Customers of the biggest regional power grid operator in the US could see their bills go up next year, largely due to skyrocketing demand for electricity coming from AI data centers.
Prices "could" go up in 2026? I'm pretty sure they already are in Illinois, and now they're going to get worse? Yup.
According to Business Insider, PJM Interconnection is the largest power grid operator in the United States, and the entire state of Illinois is part of their territory. Better start preparing your monthly budget for the shock now.
How Is AI to Blame for Illinois' Increasing Energy Prices?
To put it simply, Illinois is hot-spot for AI data centers which gobble up a ton of energy every single day. In fact, AI data centers use 5% of the state’s total electricity every month, and it's only going to get higher in the months and years ahead as AI advancement and popularity grows.
Basically, PJM Interconnection capacity prices will surge as the grid struggles to match AI data demand, and everyday customers will be the one to foot the bill. Not cool.
