Illinois Teen’s Split-Second Decision Saves Woman’s Life
As a mom raising two daughters, it pains me to admit that sometimes I lose a little faith in the younger generation.
Aside from the weird way they talk, (if I get called "bruh" one more time I may lose it), it feels like every other headline is about teenagers glued to their phones, pulling dangerous stunts for social media, or making decisions that leave adults scratching their heads wondering, "What in the world were they thinking?"

Thankfully, stories like this happen in Illinois and remind me that maybe we're giving today's kids a little too hard of a time.

Illinois 16-year-old Saves Woman's Life Following a Crash
Earlier this month 16-year-old Randy Gerlach of Morrison, Illinois was driving to work when he noticed a car sitting in a ditch along the road.
Plenty of other drivers were driving by the car without stopping, including Randy Gerlach, but something about the situation didn't sit right with him, so Randy turned his vehicle around. And it's a darn good thing he did.
Randy Gerlach told KWQC:
I wasn’t sure if something actually happened or if they just accidentally went too far on the shoulder. So I turned around because I figured by then, if it was an accident and they didn’t mean to, they would have been gone by then, and they weren’t.
That decision most likely saved a woman's life.

Randy quickly discovered the driver of the car in the ditch was unconscious with the car running and the doors locked. He immediately called 911 and first responders told him later that the woman likely wouldn't have survived if Randy had shown up just 20 minutes later.
Here's the part that really got me.
When people call Randy a hero, he simply shrugs and says he hopes others would do the same if they ever see someone in trouble.
Parents often spend so much time worrying about the choices kids are making that we sometimes forget many kids are doing incredible things without trying to go viral or rack up a million TikTok likes. Randy simply listened to his instincts and went out of his way to help a stranger.
So today, thanks to Randy Gerlach, our faith in the younger generation has been restored. Maybe that's exactly why he is a hero.
