Illinois Governor Pritzker Opens Year-Round Horse Riding Arena
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker joined other state leaders and community partners to make a big announcement for youth in our town who can sometimes feel left out.
A New Chapter for Equine Therapy in Illinois
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in southern Illinois at Giant City State Park to unveil a $430,000 enclosed horse arena at Giant City Stables in Makanda, Illinois.
According to a press release, year-round therapeutic riding services will now be available for youth, veterans, and individuals with disabilities.
A Vision Realized Through Collaboration
The new indoor equine-assisted therapy arena was funded through a public-private partnership that included the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), along with local donors.
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker praised the teamwork, saying, "This is what happens when we invest in community-centered spaces."
State funding provided $322,000, and additional support was given from Laborers' Local 773 and the Illinois Conservation Foundation.
Expanding Access to Nature and Healing
Named for a longtime supporter of the stables, Richard A. Kelley, Giant City Stables has served riders with disabilities for over 30 years, and our veterans for more than two decades.
With the new enclosed facility, services can now extend through the Winter, making sure you're receiving consistent, life-changing support.
Illinois State Parks will be welcoming record-breaking attendance this Spring and Summer, which shows Illinois' dedication to wellness and outdoor recreation.
