Public Health Notice: Contamination Detected in 47 Illinois Water Systems
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a public health notice after contaminents were found in dozens of water systems in the state.
Widespread Detection Triggers Statewide Notification Requirement
According to an Illinois EPA press release, 21 Community Water Systems (CWS) across the state were recently detected to have contamination levels exceeding new groundwater quality standards.
One or more types of per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) were found during water sampling in the CWSs, along with an additional 26 connected satellite water systems, which are included in the public health notice.
In total, the affected systems supply water to over 430,000 Illinois residents, including Winnebago, Cook, and DuPage, among others.
Understanding PFAS and the Health Risks
PFAS are synthetic chemicals used in consumer and industrial products since the 1940s for their resistance to water, oil, and heat.

They are often referred to as "forever chemicals" because of their prevalence in the environment and the human body.
According to the Illinois EPA, PFAS may accumulate in the blood and organs over time, with exposure being linked to "increased cholesterol levels, immune system effects, and certain cancers.”
Steps Illinois Residents Can Take to Protect Themselves
To minimize exposure, the public is advised to consider a home water filtration system. According to the public health notice, using a "NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 certified water filter can reduce PFAS levels."
Residents should also avoid consumer products with PFAS-related ingredients, such as certain cosmetics, non-stick cookware, and stain-resistant treatments.
Community Water Systems (CWS) are required to notify customers within 5 business days of receiving and Illinois EPA notice, according to the press release.
