I've said this before and I'll say it again, being an Illinois State Police is an REALLY interesting job. Trooper Valdez De Leon and Trooper Vodicka were on a traffic stop this weekend when they delivered more than just a traffic violation. They delivered a BABY!

The troopers were pulled over on I-57 for a traffic stop when another car pulled in front of them. The driver got out of the car and informed the officers that his sister who was also in the car was in labor. The Illinois State Police Facebook page details -

Approximately 10 minutes later at 12:08 a.m., Trooper Valdez and Trooper Vodicka successfully delivered baby Smothers. Mother and baby were transported to a local area hospital by ambulance.

Trooper Valdez De Leon was able to visit the family at the hospital and he said -

I never thought I would get the opportunity to deliver a baby on the side of the road so early in my career with the Illinois State Police. It was a high stress situation, but because of the First Responder training I received at the Illinois State Police Academy, I was confident enough to use the training I received and put it to good use, which led to a successful outcome.

Congrats to the mother and a huge shoutout to the Illinois State Police Troopers that helped deliver the baby.
