Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs announced a record-setting $303.8 million in unclaimed property returned to nearly 312,000 individuals, businesses, and nonprofits in the 2025 Fiscal Year.

A Landmark Year for I-CASH

The milestone reflects the sweeping reforms Frerichs made to the I-CASH program, a longstanding consumer protection initiative designed to reunite people with money they had forgotten about, as well as unclaimed insurance benefits, dormant bank accounts, and overlooked rebate cards.

To mark the achievement, Frerichs presented a check to support a great animal shelter.

Over $200,000 was donated to Orphans of the Storm, a Riverwoods animal shelter that's nearing its 100th anniversary.

A Life-Changing Gift for an Animal Shelter

The funds came from a deceased woman in Lake County, who named the shelter as a beneficiary in her life insurance policy.

The donation once again demonstrates the Frerichs' commitment to holding insurance companies accountable. "We are proud of returning more money to more folks, and helping people along the way," Frerichs said.

Innovations Drive Record-Breaking Success

Frerichs gave credit to the Enhanced Money Match Program for streamlining returns by automatically sending checks after electronic verification, eliminating claims for small amounts.

This summer alone, 600,000 people will receive a share of $45 million.

Since taking office, Frerichs has returned more than $2.3 billion, transforming I-CASH with user-friendly tools like electronic claims, a Spanish-language sie, and a share feature that lets users alert friends and family about unclaimed funds.
