A house fire on the northwest side of Rockford needed a large response to get the blaze under control on Wednesday afternoon (5/15).

According to a press release from the Rockford Fire Department, crews were dispatched around 3:30 pm this afternoon to 1004 N. Johnston Avenue for a reported fire.

Within 6 minutes the first crew arrived on the scene and discovered the single-level home had smoke coming from the front door and the windows. The occupants were outside the home when fire crews arrived on the scene, and they advised the FD that the fire originated in the basement of the home.

Fire crews that first arrived at the residence on N. Johnson "deployed an attack line and extinguished the fire and additional companies cleared the residence of smoke," according to the press release.

The estimated losses from the fire were approximately $45,000 and an investigation into the cause is underway, according to the press release,

The Red Cross is currently assisting those who were affected by the fires with finding temporary housing.
