Illinois Department of Motor Vehicles Making Big Changes in 14 Days

A new program launched by the Illinois Secretary of State will launch in a couple of weeks and could affect your visit to get a driver's license.

Appointment Will Be Required at Illinois' Busiest DMV Locations

According to the Office of the Illinois Secretary of State website, the "Skip-The-Line" program is an attempt to "eliminate the unpredictability of wait times" when you have to visit a Department of Motor Vehicles location.

Beginning September 1, you will be required to have an appointment if you're needing an in-person visit for a Real ID, driver's license, or ID card at all of the "Chicago and suburban locations and some central and downstate DMVs."

Hours of Operation Will Be Extended at All Illinois DMVs

All DMV locations across Illinois will begin their extended hours in September with 16 facilities open Monday through Saturday.

All DMVs will change their days and hours of operation from Tues-Sat to Mon-Fri, 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

16 DMVs will also be open on Saturday, 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Illinois Secretary of State Giannoulias is encouraging residents to take advantage of the online services from the Department of Motor Vehicles with a "simplified" process to begin on September 1, 2023.

The Rockford Central location located at 3720 E. State Street will be open Monday through Saturday, according to the Illinois Secretary of State website.
