Good News, Illinois No Longer Allows Hair Discrimination

If you have a hair style that you're proud of, you can no longer be discriminated against because of it thanks to a new law enacted in Illinois.

Yahoo News is reporting that the CROWN Act has been signed into law in Illinois, making it the 17th state to protect people and their hair styles/textures. The CROWN Act means Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural hair. That's how it became known as CROWN. The official website defines what this is all about:

The CROWN Act, which stands for “Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair,” is a law that prohibits race-based hair discrimination, which is the denial of employment and educational opportunities because of hair texture or protective hairstyles including braids, locs, twists or bantu knots.

It's hard to understand how someone could seriously be kept from an opportunity due to their natural born hair, it's a real challenge that sadly many have faced.

There was a survey conducted by Dove that found 80% of women in particular have had to change their hair from its natural state to conform to an office space. 83% say they have been judged more harshly by their employer because of their hair.

It's easy for those not affected to laugh off issues like this, but it's a real world issue that will hopefully not be an issue now in Illinois at least.
