Several horror movies have been filmed in Wisconsin, but only one is often referred to as "the worst movie ever made".

Horror Movies Filmed in Wisconsin

The other day I came across an Instagram post from Wisconsin Frights that intrigued me, even though I am far from a horror movie fan...

Honestly, I am only familiar with one of the films mentioned, The Amityville Horror, but one of the other films caught my eye due to sheer nastiness, The Giant Spider Invasion.

The 'Worst' Movie Every Made in Wisconsin

Obviously, I am not a fan of spiders so I would NEVER watch a movie about millions of them taking over a Wisconsin town, but apparently, the subject of the movie isn't the only bad thing about it.

I came across several articles that referred to The Giant Spider Invasion as being the "worst movie ever made", and once I saw the trailer I had a better understanding of why it may have earned that dubious title...

For the record I must state; The Giant Spider Invasion came out in October of 1975 and special effects were less than stellar back then, BUT Jaws also came out that year, sooo?

5 Interesting Facts About 'The Giant Spider Invasion'

We night be able to judge The Giant Spider Invasion based solely on lame special effects, but perhaps we can judge them for sloppiness?

Here are some fun facts I found about The Giant Spider Invasion;

  1. The movie was filmed primarily in Merrill and Gleason, Wisconsin.
  2. The movie's director, Bill Rebane, once referred to the movie as "The Giant Spider Disaster".
  3. A planned dramatic shot of a giant spider crushing a house went horribly wrong when the spider’s legs shot straight up, and debris from the collapsing house nearly impaled the crew operating its arms inside.
  4. In one scene, "spiders" were depicted taking over a little league game, but they were clearly Volkswagens with puppet arms on them...you could even spot the tire tracks.
  5. In the original film script the spiders were only going to be 10 feet tall, but they upped the size and scare factor in an attempt to compete with Jaws.
