Five Wisconsin Teens Become Heroes After Saving Family From Burning Home

As the mom of two nearly-teen daughters, I've caught myself saying, "What is wrong with kids these days?" more times than I'd like to admit.

I'm trying my best to raise my girls to be caring, responsible and kind people, but social media influences and online shenanigans make the job even tougher.

It's sad to say that many people are losing faith in the next generation, but then stories like this one from Wisconsin come along and remind us that there are still some truly incredible young people in this world.

Wisconsin's New Teen Heroes

On the Fourth of July, a fire broke out in the home of an elderly couple in Lodi, Wisconsin around 10:30 p.m., which could have quickly turned tragic.

A press release from the Lodi Area Fire Department says the initial cause of the fire is believed to be heavy fireworks use in the area, but there's one big part of this story that the release fails to mention.

WMTV 15 NEWS in Madison reports:

A group of friends broke down a door and ran into a burning home on Rodney Drive in the Town of Lodi on the Fourth of July, helping people inside escape before firefighters arrived.

Five 19- and 20-year-old young men were hanging out in a garage across the street when they noticed an orange glow and smoke that they quickly figured out wasn't coming from a bonfire... then they rushed into action.

Instead of standing there recording it on their phones or waiting for someone else to help, the friends split up, pounding on windows and trying to get inside from both the front and back of the home.

Eventually, they forced their way inside and found an elderly couple along with several family members who had been celebrating the homeowner Jim's 91st birthday.

One by one, the five young men helped to get the entire family out of the home before firefighters arrived, and just minutes before the fire intensified.

Lodi firefighters later said the young men's quick actions likely saved lives, but sadly, the entire home was destroyed.

As a mom, I can't stop thinking about the split-second decision these young men made.  They weren't looking for attention or trying to become internet famous. They simply saw people in danger and did what they could to help.

These Wisconsin teens didn't just save a family. They reminded the rest of us that there are plenty of young adults out there with courage, compassion, and a willingness to risk everything for complete strangers. Thank you for restoring my faith in "kids these days."
