I learned something new about Wisconsin today, and I'm pretty sure I don't like it.

Weird Things in Wisconsin

If you ever spend some time looking up weird facts about Wisconsin, you will discover many unusual stories that also involve many different lakes throughout Wisconsin.

Need some examples? Here are two to get you started...

  • Legend says that ancient pyramids lie beneath the waters of Rock Lake in Lake Mills, Wisconsin.
  • Many people claim that Devil's Lake in Baraboo, Wisconsin is home to a giant squid-like creature called "The Devil's Lake Monster".

As a person who often swims in Wisconsin lakes, reading stories like that always makes me a little nervous.

Do I honestly believe that giant monster creatures or ancient pyramids lurk beneath the water I am swimming in? No, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't often wonder what weird stuff lies on the lake's bottom. (Something about not being able to see through the water gives me the willies).

Do you know what makes me even more nervous about all the time I spend in Wisconsin? Seeing videos like this from Wautoma, Wisconsin (which is not far from where my family's lake house is)...

Yes, that is an alligator, or more specifically a caiman, which is in the same family as alligators. Yes, that caiman was not found in any Wisconsin water, but it very well could have been, and that is what makes me so uneasy!

Does Wisconsin Have A Lot of Alligators?

I know some people reading this probably think I'm ridiculous for worrying about a baby alligator/caiman being caught in Wisconsin, but here's the reason why I find the news a little unnerving.

While reading through the comments on those videos I noticed one that started like this;

On average there are about 10 calls per year in the state of Wisconsin for alligators.

Now, 10 alligators might not seem like a lot to some, but to me that sure seems like a lot! It also makes me wonder how many more alligators/caimans are living in the woods and waters of Wisconsin and just haven't been found yet?!? I sure hope I never have to find out!
