Could Illinois Wendy’s Locations Be Affected by Closures?

Shocking news yesterday: one of the largest names in fast food announced it will close many of its restaurants.

Wendy’s Plans to Close 300 to 350 U.S. Locations in 2026

Wendy's says it will close 5% to 6% of its locations, targeting "consistently underperforming" stores. In 2024, they closed 240 Wendy's locations and another 28 just this past year.

Wendy’s Strategy Shift: Value Menus, Digital Marketing, and New Items

Not sure how this aligns with the closures, but they are innovating on the menu to add items like a cheesy bacon cheeseburger, which I would've thought they had on the menu for years now, as well as more chicken options.

The reason they are innovating is clear: a 5.5% revenue loss in the most recent 4th quarter has prompted the introduction of new and/or different menu items.

Could Illinois or Rockford Wendy’s Locations Be Affected?

Obviously, Illinois (Rockford included) has plenty of Wendy's locations, and while no specific locations have been announced, here are a few things that you should look for if you're wondering if your favorite place is on the chopping block.

No Illinois Locations Identified Yet

Is the building they are currently in old? Is traffic around that area just slow, especially around breakfast, and is there plenty of other fast food competition in the area?

Again, those are just hypothetical indicators to watch for, as we don't know for sure which Wendy's will stay or go, and the decisions will likely be based on metrics we don't see.
