After receiving nearly 400 nominations over the past seven weeks, selecting just one winner was a challenging task. Each entry told an inspiring story of selflessness and service, but one veteran’s dedication stood out.
A Legacy of Service
Chief Petty Officer Moss, a Navy veteran who served 22 and a half years, comes from a lineage of service.
Her father served in the Pacific on a Navy ship in Okinawa, and her mother was a "Rosie the Riveter," working tirelessly in the shipyards. Following in their footsteps, Laverne has devoted her life not only to her country but also to supporting her fellow veterans.
Her contributions to the local community are profound: Moss helps veterans access benefits, organizes coat and clothing drives, and even drives veterans to their medical appointments.
For years, she has also sent hundreds of boxes of Girl Scout cookies to service members overseas, covering the costs herself.
An Unforgettable Surprise
When Laverne learned that she had been selected for this special transformation, her immediate response was one of humility: “There’s got to be someone else that needs it more.”
Yet, Window World of Rockford felt that her lifelong dedication to helping others made her the perfect choice.
As part of the transformation, her home will receive new energy-efficient windows, improving comfort and reducing energy costs—a fitting tribute to her years of service.
Chief Petty Officer Moss’s story reminds us of the profound impact veterans have on our communities, and Window World of Rockford’s initiative ensures that her sacrifices will be recognized for years to come.
