Rockford Police Investigate Tragic Death of 66-Year-Old Pedestrian
In the early hours of Monday, August 5, 2024, Rockford Police were called to a distressing scene on the 4900 block of East State Street. At approximately 1:30 a.m., officers arrived to find 66-year-old Hoa Huynh lying in the roadway.

Tragically, she was pronounced deceased at the scene. The incident, a hit-and-run involving a vehicle and a pedestrian, has left the community in shock and mourning.
Rockford Police Traffic Investigators and the Intel Unit quickly launched an investigation, leading them to identify Maurice Calvanese, 59, as the prime suspect.
Winnebago County State’s Attorney Authorizes Serious Charges Against Calvanese
On August 7, 2024, the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized the following charges against Calvanese:
- aggravated DUI death,
- leaving the scene of a fatal crash,
- driving without a valid license,
- operating an uninsured vehicle,
- and driving with a suspended registration.
Despite these serious allegations, Calvanese is currently not in custody.
The charges against Calvanese are still accusations, and he remains presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, according to a press release from the Rockford PD.

The Rockford Police Department is appealing to the public for any information that might aid in locating Calvanese and bringing closure to this heartbreaking case
