Teen Dies in Rockford After BMX Midwest National Race
This weekend Searls Park in Rockford hosted the 2019 USA BMX Midwest Nationals.
Day three of the races was this Sunday, which started a little late due to rain.
But sadly mid-race an accident took place where one racer ended up passing due to their injuries sustained.
USA BMX confirmed it was 15-year-old Carson Stoffel of Huntington, Indiana who died in a Rockford Hospital Sunday night.
It hasn't been reported if any other racers were injured in the crash.
USA BMX said in a statement:
We are deeply saddened by Carson’s passing and our thoughts and prayers go out to his father, Jake Stoffel, his mother, Krista Rohrabaugh, his brother, Chandler, and his sister, Bryleigh. To Carson’s family, we would like to extend our sincere condolences and assure the Stoffel family that USA BMX will do everything to assist and support them through this difficult time."
They also told BMXNews.com:
USA BMX has worked with Rockford BMX for 33 consecutive years on the Midwest Nationals, and for more than 40 years have worked closely with our athletes and track operators year round to ensure the safest possible conditions for our competitors."
Sounds like it was a freak accident, sadly this tragedy happened.
Deepest sympathies to the child's family during this difficult time.
