Demolition Has Been Approved for Singer Mental Health Center in Rockford, So What’s Next?
After over a decade of decay and abandonment, Singer Mental Health Center in Rockford is one step closer to the wrecking ball thanks to help from the State of Illinois.
Rockford's Biggest Eyesore
Singer Mental Health Center in Rockford opened in the early 1960s, and for over 50 years it was the premier source for psychiatric services in Northern Illinois. In 2012, government budget cuts forced Singer Mental Health Center to close, and since then it has been left to rot.
In short, the former Singer Mental Health building needs to come down, but the major question is: what should be done with the 100 acres it currently sits on?
The Future of Singer Mental Health Site
In early 2025, Governor Pritzker included Singer Mental Health Center in the Surplus to Success Plan that was part of Illinois' proposed Fiscal Year Budget for 2026 that allocates millions of dollars into remediating and repurposing state-owned sites. That plan, thankfully, has now been approved.
WTVO reports that Senator Steve Stadelman said:
[The legislature] approved $500 million to help the state and local governments redevelop that property.
The good news is these funds will not only help pay for the demolition of the former Singer Mental Health building, but also make the land "shovel ready" for new developments.
Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara has said the land where Singer Mental Health Center currently stands could be used for housing, but the exact use of the property still remains undecided.
I'd be willing to bet it will still take years before redevelopment plans become reality, but at least the demolition of Singer Mental Health Center will be happening sooner, rather than later. I think the community is beyond ready to kiss that major eyesore goodbye, and see it become a community asset once again.
