Parents are always asking what goes into Rockford Public School District's decision on canceling classes because of weather. Well, here ya go.

There are three key factors before parents and guardians learn of a weather-related school closing. RPS 205 has simplified the process and shared it for all to learn.

  1. The best weather information is reviewed and how it will affect students, staff, and parents. Decisions are made as early as possible, often times early in the morning.
  2. Though there isn't an official "too cold" temperature, a wind chill of -25° is when officials consider canceling classes and activities.
  3. RPS 205's Superintendent makes the final decision after discussing with the district's leadership team to come up with the best decision for students.

Ultimately, as indicated in the chart below, parents have the final say as to whether or not their child will stay home due to weather.
