Everyone is having to make sacrifices during the COVID-19 pandemic, but I think the graduating Class of 2020 is one of the groups hit the hardest. They have been busting their behinds for years to reach milestones and celebrations they now have to miss out on, and it just breaks my heart.

Local school districts are doing everything in their power to give graduates the ceremonies they have worked so hard to reach, but nothing will compare to sitting in an auditorium for a couple hours in an uncomfortable cap and gown surrounded by your family and friends to celebrate your achievements.

When I was in high school, I was one of the students who worked hard to receive high honors. I graduated in the top 20 of my class, but I just couldn't nail down the Valedictorian or Salutatorian title. It takes an incredible amount of hard work, determination, persistence and dedication, and these students deserve their moment to shine. Thankfully, RPS 205 understands that, and I thought it was so cool to see these billboards as I drove around running errands this weekend in Rockford.

Each one of these outstanding students deserves a huge round of applause from all of us. CONGRATULATIONS!
