The searching, collecting, purchasing and carving of pumpkins is great, but what happens after Halloween?

You probably know, but that once majestic pumpkin you spent hours meticulously carving now looks like a sad imitation of its self.

Now what? Do you pitch that poor pumpkin in the trash? Well, new studies show you shouldn't do that because it's bad for the environment.

What if you could launch that sucker a mile high in the air and watch it splatter into a pool of delicious orange goo?

I'm down, and I'm fairly certain anyone who bought a pumpkin should be too.

The Discovery Center Museum is asking you to bring by those once fabulous pumpkins to their place. When you're there, you'll be greeted by a massive catapult where you can place your old pumpkin friend, say goodbye, and just mere minutes later watch it get launched into the Rockford atmosphere.

It's a fitting end for that formerly beautiful pumpkin. That is until it splatters into oblivion.

The Smashing Pumpkins event at Discovery Center runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m on Sunday, November 4.

The Discovery Center is located at 711 North Main Street in Rockford.
