Rockford Restaurants Stepped Up to Feed Police During Standoff

Last Friday the intersection of Mulford Road and East State Street was closed to traffic for about 7 hours due to the hostage situation that took place at Heritage Credit Union.

For nearly seven hours law enforcement from all over the area were stationed at the credit union, and for nearly seven hours the operations at surrounding businesses were severely affected, but that didn't stop them from stepping up in support.

According to mystateline.com, Lino’s, Portillo’s, McDonald’s, and Dos Reales all either brought food, or opened their doors, to feed people on the scene for free, and for this I think they all need a huge round of applause.

Dos Reales General Manager Jose Gonzalez told mystateline.com;

“We felt [we couldn’t] leave those people outside,” said Dos Reales General Manager Jose Gonzalez. “We decided to stay open until 10pm for them.

“We started warming stuff [up] and serving tacos for everybody. We had [Winnebago County Sheriff’s deputies], the marshals, local police, [and] we had FBI.”

Gonzalez estimates Dos Reales served about 50 to 60 people Friday night, and the restaurant's generosity did not go unnoticed. Gonzalez  told mystateline.com that the manager of Heritage Credit Union left a $1,000 tip for the staff of Dos Reales as a thank you for their kindness and hospitality.

I didn't think it was possible to love Dos Reales more than I already do, but they just proved me wrong.
