
Man Recovered from River in Rockford Has Been Identified
A body recovered from the Rock River has been identified as a man from Rockford.
Recovery Efforts on the Rock River
According to a press release from the Winnebago County Coroner's Office, the man who drowned in the Rock River was 51-year-old Anthony Brooks.
The Winnebago County Coroner's Office reported being called to the river near East State Street around 12:10 pm on September 15, after a body was recovered from the water.
Rescue Attempts by Witnesses and First Responders
According to the report, a bystander spotted Brooks treading water around 10:18 am and attempted to help.
Rockford PD and Fire personnel responded quickly, and the Rockford Fire Department's Dive Team launched a search when Brooks went under and did not resurface.
At 12:09 pm, dive crews located Brooks and removed him from the water, but attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
Investigation Underway
The Winnebago County Coroner's Officer pronounced Brooks deceased at 12:20 pm following the recovery, and an autopsy has been conducted, but preliminary results are still pending additional studies.
The Coroner's office is continuing to investigate in coordination with the Rockford Police Department to determine the circumstances leading to the death of Mr. Brooks.
