In an effort to find the people responsible for abandoning over 50 dogs in Belvidere, Illinois on July 14, 2024, PETA has offered a $5000 reward to anyone who comes forward with information that leads to their arrest.

Dogs Abandoned at Hammertime Dog Park in Belvidere

At some point during the evening of Sunday, July 14 and early morning on Monday, July 15, over 40 dogs were abandoned at Hammertime Dog Park in Belvidere, Illinois in horrible, stormy conditions. Thankfully, the dogs were discovered safe early on Monday and transferred to Boone County Animal Services who were quick to find other rescues and foster willing to take the sweet pups in for care.

While the end of this story is happy, (for the dogs), new details that have emerged in the last week most definitely are not:

  • All the dogs found are of the same breed, so it is assumed they were a part of a big breeding operation.
  • After rescuing about 40 dogs from the dog park, several more have been found outside the grounds...and at least one was several days later.

If this whole situation isn't infuriating enough, here comes the most disgusting part...

I found this comment on one of Boone County Animals Service's posts, and it doesn't look like Belvidere was the only place these chose to dump their pups.

Before I start saying a lot of things I'm going to regret, let's move onto what PETA is doing to help find the people responsible.
