Since 2019, there have been 52 conditions that you need to be diagnosed with to receive a medical cannabis card in the state of Illinois.

Illinois Expands Medical Cannabis Program with Four New Conditions

For the first time in 5 years, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has approved 4 new medical conditions eligible to be treated with marijuana and is effective immediately.

According to the IDPH, some of the initial 52 approved conditions for medical cannabis were:

  • Autism
  • Agitation of Alzheimer’s disease
  • Cancer
  • Glaucoma
  • Lupus
  • Migraines
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Post-Concussion Syndrome
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

Illinois residents suffering from specific medical conditions now have new options for relief.

The newly approved conditions for medical cannabis treatment are endometriosis, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, and female orgasmic disorder.

These conditions often result in chronic pain or other debilitating symptoms, making them significant additions to the program.

A Careful Review Process

“Medical cannabis has been shown to offer an effective means of relief from a variety of debilitating medical conditions and symptoms,” said IDPH spokesperson Vohra. “IDPH reviews petitions carefully using expert opinion and the most up-to-date evidence to make decisions that best serve Illinois residents.”

According to the press release, the IDPH evaluates petitions to add conditions by reviewing scientific analyses and medical literature. The goal is to ensure that medical cannabis remains a safe and effective treatment option for those in need.

How to Get Certified for Medical Cannabis in Illinois

Patients diagnosed with any of these conditions can now work with their healthcare providers to obtain certification for medical cannabis treatment.
