Chicago Adds New Surcharge to Uber and Lyft Rides in Certain Areas
If you're a big fan of using rideshare services, especially in Chicago, I have some bad news to share with you.
Chicago Driving Issues
I think I can speak for many Illinois residents when I say it's fun to visit Chicago, but driving in the city when you're not used to it, most definitely is not.
Between the traffic, pedestrians, and unfamiliar streets, driving in Chicago makes me a nervous wreck. So, whenever I go into the city and plan on visiting several different places that aren't within walking distance, I turn to rideshare services...and so does everyone else. That's where the problem begins.
Rising Chicago Rideshare Costs
We all know convenience usually comes at a cost, and that is exactly what you can expect when visiting some of the most popular places in Chicago via rideshare services like Uber and Lyft now.
According to WGN, an additional surcharge has been added to Uber and Lyft pickups and drop-offs in two certain zones of the city, during certain times of the day.
Zone 1 covers much of the North Side, from Foster Avenue to the North, South to East 31st Street from Western Avenue to the West and East to DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
Zone 2 hits the Hyde Park area.
The new $1.50 surcharge applies to single riders in those two zones, any day of the week between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., and is an addition to the $1.13 surcharge already in place. (Shared rides in the same zones during the same times will be charged a 60-cent surcharge)
I guess the moral of the story is this: If driving in the city of Chicago isn't an option for you, prepare your wallet to pay more OR starting utilizing CTA services instead.
