When news broke last Saturday that an Illinois State Police Trooper had been killed by a wrong-way driver on I-94, my stomach immediately sunk. Not only was this the second Illinois State Trooper to be killed by a driver in a matter of days, but I just had this sinking feeling that alcohol was involved in the cause of the crash.

Turns out I was right, but it's a whole lot worse than I imagined.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the wrong-way driver:

had no record of having a state driver's license, had a DUI conviction and was in the court system for another one prior to the crash, according to the Illinois Secretary of State's Office.

“He never had a driver's license in the state of Illinois,” Dave Druker, spokesman for the secretary's of state office, said about Dan Davies, 44, of Calumet City. “He had no business being on the road or anywhere near an automobile.”

Now I am MAD! I just cannot understand how some people can have such disregard for other people's lives.

The Tribune article also says;

The Lake County Coroner’s Office also reported Monday that it appears Davies consumed alcohol prior to the crash.

“I would say alcohol was a factor,” Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper said in discussing the autopsy results of the motorist, “We just don’t know how much.”

The funeral services and procession for Illinois State Police Trooper Gerald Ellis will begin around Noon today in Lake County. If you would like to pay your respects to his family and brothers and sisters in blue, here is the procession route provided by the Illinois State Police:
