Chicago's Cloud Gate, often referred to as "The Bean," is a captivating sculpture that holds a unique place in modern art and urban landscapes.

Designed by British artist Anish Kapoor, this iconic stainless steel structure stands out due to its distinctive reflective surface and innovative design. The Bean's seamless, mirror-like exterior not only reflects the surrounding cityscape and sky but also allows you to see yourself and others in intriguing and distorted ways.

This interplay between the artwork, its environment, and its observers delivers a different experience every time you visit. The Cloud Gate's monumental size and elliptical shape create are pretty inviting when you first walk upon it.

Its ability to merge art, architecture, and urban life makes Cloud Gate a special symbol of Chicago's cultural vibrancy and its commitment to pushing artistic boundaries in public spaces.

Why is Chicago's Bean Sculpture Closing?

I saw this headline dated on Instagram, Chicago's beloved Cloud Gate will be closed through Spring 2024 starting tomorrow. That 'tomorrow' has arrived and The Bean is now closed for several months for a major reconstruction project on Grainger Plaza to begin. According to Secret Chicago, the reconstruction of the plaza surrounding the sculpture will,

replace pavers and make other repairs and accessibility upgrades to the Plaza—to enhance the nearly 20-year-old Park’s appearance, visitor experience, and position as the #1 attraction in the Midwest.

So, while The Bean gets a bit of a makeover, spend that time in Chicago grabbing an iconic Italian beef, the best corned beef in Chicago, some fabulous deep-dish, or one of these 5 hot dog experiences below.
