Thanksgiving Day kinda sucks for dogs; all that delicious smelling food and more than half of it they CANNOT EAT.

For several years, two gigantic Saint Bernards owned my heart... and my kitchen. It's a challenge to cook some tasty things and your dogs can actually walk right up to the kitchen counter and lay their heads on it.

Whenever I hosted Thanksgiving Day, I knew that they would be drooling all day.

Big dogs = Big drool puddles on the kitchen floor.

I know I didn't want to keep it all from them, but what was off-limits and what things could they eat, from the Thanksgiving feast?

Thanksgiving Foods Dogs CAN'T Eat

  • Onions
  • Ham
  • Leeks (never eaten a leek, never cooked a leek, my boys were safe here)
  • Casseroles
  • Garlic (I've always felt bad for dogs on this one... garlic is life!)
  • Stuffing
  • Grapes
  • Turkey bone

For a little more clarity on how these foods dogs can eat should be served, here's what was shared in the Instagram post, from the American Kennel Club.

AKC is actually against giving your dog ham because of the high sodium and they suggest a healthier treat.

Sweet potatoes are good as long as there aren't any extra ingredients.

Only boiled or baked potatoes and again, no extras, like butter, sour cream, salt, or pepper.

Plain green beans only.

No pre-spiced pumpkin mix either.
