It's not new to hear of a potential carcinogen in a particular food, but this brand new list is staggering. More than 80 popular Illinois foods are said to have potential cancer-causing plastics according to a brand new report just shared in 2024.

The list is so long, there's no room to share all of them here. Consumer Reports just dropped an article called "The Plastic Chemicals Hiding in your Food" and their list includes more than 80 absolute Illinois food favorites. They tested "bisphenols and phthalates" in many different types of food and the results they found were troubling at best.

It wasn't just popular processed foods either. Even some "organic" foods were found to have high levels of these chemicals. How do these elements get in our food? The Consumer Reports story blames "tubing, conveyor belts, and gloves used during food processing".

Here are just a small fraction of the popular Illinois food items they found with high levels of these plastic chemicals:

  • Coca-Cola Original
  • Lipton Diet Green Tea Citrus
  • Gatorade Frost Thirst Quencher Glacier Freeze
  • Hormel Chili With Beans
  • Mrs. Butterworth’s Syrup Original
  • Sweet Baby Ray’s Barbecue Sauce Original
  • SlimFast High Protein Meal Replacement Shake Creamy Chocolate
  • Great Value (Walmart) Ice Cream Homestyle Vanilla
  • Wendy’s Crispy Chicken Nuggets
  • McDonald’s Quarter Pounder With Cheese
  • Little Caesars Classic Cheese Pizza
  • Taco Bell Chicken Burrito
  • Pizza Hut Original Cheese Pan Pizza
  • Gerber Cereal for Baby Rice
  • Johnsonville Smoked Sausage Beef Hot Links
  • Del Monte Sliced Peaches in 100% Fruit Juice
  • Banquet Chicken Pot Pie
  • Chef Boyardee Beefaroni Pasta in Tomato and Meat Sauce
  • StarKist Chunk Light Tuna in Water

The list truly goes on and on. I don't know about you, but I either have had many of these foods in my kitchen and/or have them now. The fact that even baby food contains these potentially harmful materials is troubling.

I counted 81 different items that Consumer Reports found with these chemicals. Check out their full article for more details.
