Rising grocery prices are nothing new in 2022, but experts say a butter shortage will be the latest thing to wreak havoc on our baking plans this holiday season.

Prepare Yourself Now For High Holiday Baking Costs

I never bake anything from scratch, unless it's Christmas cookies, and I just read an article that says my favorite holiday tradition is going to cost way more to pull off this year. Not cool. The price for eggs is up. The price for milk is up, and now butter prices are on the rise. Again, not cool. So what's the reason for these major price increases? A labor shortage and low milk production numbers throughout the dairy industry according to the Wall Street Journal.

The Most Ridiculous Reason For the Nationwide Butter Shortage

Production problems within the dairy business aren't the only reason we are having to pay stupid prices for butter at the grocery store right now. A recent TikTok trend is partly to blame. Seriously. According to WGN;

A shortage of butter also comes amid a new trend drawing attention on TikTok and Instagram – butter boards.

Have you heard of a butter board? Since I am really trying to avoid having my life evolve around TikTok, I had no clue what a "butter board" is until today.

Essentially, a butter board is a cheaper version of a charcuterie board where you literally slather softened butter all over a board, top it with yummy stuff, and then scoop it up with fancy bread, crackers, etc. Rumor has it that this video is responsible for starting the madness that is currently cleaning our grocery shelves out of butter...

Now, I will not say that this butter board trend does not sound and look delicious, but seriously, is it worth paying stupid prices for butter?

FYI, WGN's article also says that "the dairy industry is well aware of the issue and is working to supply Americans with the products they need in the months to come".

I am glad that they are working hard to resolve the butter issues, but if it the price tag forces me to cut the number of cookies I make each Christmas in half, I will NOT be happy. What about you?
