People worldwide are obsessed with Temu right now, but some experts are warning that shopping on Temu's app or website is putting your personal information at risk.

Temu Shopping Obsession

I'm not exaggerating when I tell you that at least every 5th post I see on my social media feeds is a Temu ad or that at least once a day someone I know is preaching the glory of Temu to me. Have I purchased anything from Temu yet? Nope. Have I been browsing the Temu website daily? 100 percent!

What Is Temu?

For those that have not yet discovered the glory of Temu, it's a website and app that offers extremely low prices on a huge selection of goods. Temu has everything from shoes and clothes to musical instruments and appliances. Seriously, once glance at the website and you will probably see at least 10 things you want, (but definitely don't need), for dirt cheap. It's addictive for sure, but like so many other shopping websites these days, buyers must beware.

2 Reasons to Be Leary of Shopping on Temu

I think anyone who does online shopping knows that doing so puts your personal information at risk, so this Temu warning from consumer technology expert Kim Komando should be taken with a grain of salt.

According to Komando, these are two big things everyone needs to be aware of, and be leary of, when it comes to shopping on Temu;

1. "The prices are low because the goods are cheap. The pictures of what you see advertised may not be what you actually get." Unfortunately, this very same warning could be used for so many other shopping sites these days. I think by now most of us have learned that cheap deals are usually too good to be true. Case in point, my friend Gina who lives in the UK, and has very tiny feet, bought a foldable step stool off Temu recently. This is what she received...

2. "As you shop, Temu collects lots of information." Yes, dang near every website collects LOTS of our personal information these days, but apparently Temu takes it a few steps further. Seeing the info Temu collects listed in black and white is very concerning. Here are just a few of them...

  • Your name, phone number, and address.
  • Your birthday, photo, and social media profiles.
  • Your phone or computer’s operating system and version, IP address, GPS location and browsing data.
  • Your info from public records, social media, data brokers, credit bureaus, and marketing partners.

Again, I must stress, WAY more websites than just Temu collect a lot of personal information these days. We all know this,  BUT it's easy to forget that when so many fabulous deals are staring you in the face.

Will you stop shopping on Temu now? The verdict is still out for me...
