The United States Postal Service will be changing the mail delivery process in Illinois soon, and you probably won't like it.

Illinois' "Snail Mail"

People all across the country tend to refer to the United States Postal Service  as "snail mail", but is that negative term actually accurate?

I ship a lot of packages via USPS, and most of the time my deliveries arrive to their destination ahead of schedule, but that may not be the case soon.

According to a recent Newsweek article;

Starting April 1, service standard adjustments will be made for first-class mail, periodicals, marketing mail, and package services, according to the USPS.

So, what exactly does this mean for Illinois mail users? Slower delivery times on certain packages and mail pieces. Wonderful.

Changes to Illinois Mail Delivery

I think we can all agree slower mail service is not ideal, BUT implementing these changes is going to save the government money and allow USPS to operate more efficiently. Also, the coming changes aren't as bad as they sound.

The Newsweek article says;

USPS will deliver 75 percent of first-class mail at the same standard. Fourteen percent will be upgraded to a faster standard, while 11 percent will have a slower standard. All first-class mail will still be delivered within the current one to five business day range.

I think this means, if I'm reading between the lines correctly, that "junk" mail will be delivered at a slower rate and important mail will be delivered faster?

USPS Postmaster General Louis DeJoy said;

By implementing the new standards and the operational initiatives to which they are aligned, we will be better able to achieve the goals of our modernization plans and create a high-performing, financially sustainable organization, which is necessary to achieve the statutory policies and objectives established for the Postal Service by law.

Hopefully these changes will be enough to save USPS? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
