Northern Illinois got its first real winter weather of the 2020/2021 season over the past week or so. Most of the significant snowfall happening late into the evening and late-night hours meaning fewer vehicles were on the road. Ultimately, this allowed the city and state snow removal crews to do their jobs safely and effectively. After the snowfall began and leading into the following morning, social media became flooded with "how are the roads?". Let this article be the source for never needing to ask that question again.

In early December we shared the City of Rockford's new Snow and Ice App, which has so many important from road conditions (of course) but also how to report mailbox damage, roads/intersections that need more salt, important phone numbers, and more. But, what about road conditions outside of Rockford. There is actually an Illinois state-run website readily available for you to use, for free.

IDOT (Illinois Department of Transportation) has an up-to-the-minute website with valuable information to help navigate through the Land of Lincoln.

  • Winter Road Conditions
  • Illinois Winter Trouble Spots
  • Blowing Snow and/or Areas of Icing.
  • Bridges Prone to Icing
  • Roadways Susceptible to Icing
  • Scattered Snow-Covered Roads Due to Blowing Snow
  • Steep Grades

There are also tops on road closures, construction zone, Illinois Tollway closures, scenic byways, E85 biodiesel locations, rest stops, and more. You can winter road conditions HERE and everything else HERE.
