The Surprising History Behind New Glarus Brewing Company
As an Illinois woman who often spends time in Wisconsin, I can wholeheartedly say I am a big fan of New Glarus Spotted Cow beer, but today I learned something that made me love this beer even more.
Visiting New Glarus, Wisconsin
This past Memorial Day weekend my husband and I along with some friends went on a Southern Wisconsin bar hopping adventure which included a stop in New Glarus with one major flaw: New Glarus Brewing Company is not open on Sundays.
In all the years that I have been drinking and loving New Glarus' Spotted Cow, I have never been to the brewery before, and today I learned something awesome about the brewery that makes me want to go there even more.
Fascinating Facts About New Glarus Brewing Company
Just when I thought I knew everything I needed to know about New Glarus Brewing Company, I saw this post on Facebook the other day:
How did I not know until today that New Glarus Brewing Company is a woman-founded brewery? Am I the only one that is incredibly impressed by that fact?
New Glarus Brewing Company's website says:
New Glarus Brewing Company wasted no time establishing itself as a world class operation. In 1992, Daniel Carey passed the Diploma Master Brewer's Exam at the Institute of Brewing, London. Deb Carey raised the capital for the start-up as a gift to her husband, establishing herself as the first woman to found and operate a brewery in the United States.
I also think it's awesome that while the Careys are still active in the brewery's operations, they have since granted ownership of the company to their employees so each one "can realize their own American dream".
