Chicago's top cop is out. Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy has been fired by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel

The Chicago Tribune reports that the announcement was made on Tuesday morning at city hall. This comes on the heels the first-degree murder in the death of an African American teen who was shot 16 times by an on duty Chicago Police officer. The incident occurred on the Southwest Side of Chicago last year. The video of the shooting was released to the public last week.

Emanuel cited a lack of public trust in the police leadership. According to the Chicago Tribune, the mayor, in a press conference, said:

This morning, I formally asked for his resignation," Emanuel said at a City Hall news conference where he appointed a task force to look at police accountability.

The mayor said it's an "undeniable fact" that public trust has eroded in the Chicago Police Department.
