Apple has long been accused of throttling their old iPhones in order to pressure the user into purchasing a new one. In 2017, they admitted to the accusations being true after tech gurus and customers made accusations saying that software updates were causing lowered performance by the phones. The company immediately responded with an explanation, saying they were addressing issues with old lithium-ion batteries that would make the phone shut down to protect itself. Apple later apologized by offering new batteries for $79, later dropping the price to $29.

The US District Court is overseeing the settlement agreement that requires Apple to pay the owners of specific iPhone models $25 per affected device. It'll come to somewhere between $310 million and $500 million.

iPhone owners that had an iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, 7, 7 Plus, or SE bought before December 21, 2017 will be able to file settlement claims.
