The sound of a fire crackling, the smell of fresh evergreen and bug spray, kids splashing in the lake, and us adults getting our drink on. Let's hit the woods.

I can close my eyes and imagine it all. Camping season is here. As for me, I'm not much of a camper. Luckily, these days it's not what it used to be. Have you heard the term "glamping" i.e. glamorous camping? If not, make sure you Google it. I laughed the first time I heard it. So whether you're a camper or a glamper, these Illinois campgrounds will be sure to accommodate all your needs. And they are all less than 100 miles from Rockford.

Located in Oglesby, this is one of the most popular state parks in Illinois. Electricity, water, and showers are available on all the campgrounds. So not to worry, you won't have to go without. From the beautiful waterfalls to the mountain like scenery, you just can't go wrong here. There is also a wide variety of activities to keep the family entertained from horse back riding to canoeing. And there's even a winery. Does it get any better than that?

Parents, this is where you head if you want to keep your kids entertained. You can relax while staff engages your kids in fun activities ranging from talent shows to science experiments. Make sure you check out their list of themed weekends so you can make sure you plan on going when there is something that your kids are excited about.

Beachfront camping, kayak tours, hiking, wildlife, and swimming. This unique campground has so much to offer for outdoor lovers, and you can wake up to the sparkling Illinois river every morning. They also have "glamping", where the campground does practically everything for you from the tent set up to the cooking. It is also very family friendly.

Prepare yourself to be amazed. This gorgeous state park is located on a 6.5 mile stretch of beautiful Lake Michigan. There are 241 sites, all with access to electricity and showers. If you are a water lover, this is the spot for you. Whether you are laying out and listening to the waves, swimming, fishing, or just taking in all the beauty around you, you will not be disappointed.

This gem sits right on the Illinois/Wisconsin border. You would miss it if you didn't know it was there. Not quite the experience you 'glampers' are looking for, Apple Canyon requires you to "rough it" a bit more with the only shower/baths being the river. She is worth it though with her limestone bluffs, bubbling springs, steep ravines, and miles of luscious trails. You will not be sorry that you chose to venture out of your comfort zone and be a bit more adventurous. Don't forget to bring your camera.
