Illinois Wind Turbine Falls to Ground in Petersburg

A wind turbine in downstate Illinois apparently lost its emergency breaks and spun out of control until it finally collapsed into a field this past weekend.

Area Evacuated Because of Runaway Windmill

According to WLDS, the community of Petersburg, IL became aware of a potential issue with the wind turbine around a local high school on Friday (4/21) and began to evacuate the area around the turbine.

A girls' softball game was already underway on the PORTA High School grounds when it was suspended in the 3rd inning because of the out-of-control wind turbine.

This video posted on Facebook by Tiffany Avery West shows the wind turbine spinning at high speed on Friday (4/21) with flood lights on it.

The following day she posted another video on Facebook that clearly shows one of the blades completely failed and has heavy damage, yet it keeps on spinning.

On Saturday, a video surfaced on Facebook showing the moment the wind turbine collapsed, and the hilarious commentary from the kids in the background.
