Dangerous Blood Donation Shortage in Illinois

Summer is typically a tough season for blood banks across Illinois. People are just too busy to think about donating lifesaving blood, but with the holiday weekend ahead, low donation numbers could have dire consequences.

Before I became unable to donate blood due to health conditions, I would drop by the Rock River Valley Blood Center every couple of months to donate blood. I always knew blood donations are vital for saving lives, but my family recently received a scary view of just how important strangers rolling up their sleeves truly is.

Long story short, my dad has been dealing with some serious health issues the last few months. He has been admitted to the hospital several times for dangerously low hemoglobin numbers, and the only treatment for that problem is a blood transfusion.

I don't want to even think about what would have happened if the hospital didn't have the blood supplies my dad desperately needed, and I don't want any other family to have to face that either.

Basically, this is my heartfelt plea to the Stateline community to set aside an hour this weekend to donate blood.

Rock River Valley Blood Center Desperately Needs Blood Donors

Unfortunately, holiday weekends always bring more accidents and more traumas, so the Rock River Valley Blood Center is taking action now to get ahead of a potentially dangerous situation.

A recent RRVBC press release says;

Over holiday weekends, the center typically sees an average reduction of 150 units of donated blood, while local hospitals often see an increase in trauma patients.

Holiday weekends are already challenging for us, and with the continuing critical blood shortage we have been experiencing since May, the need for donations has never been more critical.

As a thank you, anyone who donates blood between August 28 and September 7, 2024 will receive a free large insulated travel mug, (while supplies last), and will go into the monthly drawing for a $500 gift card.
