New rules and substantial fees for ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft could be put in place if the lawmakers in the City of Rockford get their way.

Among the new regulations for the services:

  • Insurance requirements
  • Background checks
  • Zero tolerance for drugs and alcohol

These rules are based on a state of Illinois law enacted in January 2015.

The Rockford Register Star is reporting that Rockford aldermen will assess the proposal at tonight's Code and Regulation Committee meeting.

The complete proposed ordinance can be seen here.

Companies such as Uber and Lyft would also be required to pay the city of Rockford $1,000 and $2,000 for a license.

The city also has proposed changes to its taxi rules.
