The Old Taylor Swift Is Dead: Hear Her Clapback Song ‘Look What You Made Me Do’
Taylor Swift has released a new single called "Look What You Made Me Do" as the first taste of her sixth studio album. Reputation will impact in full on Nov. 10.
As predicted by her use of snakes in teasing new music — it has become her signature emoji — "Look What You Made Me Do" is a response to haters, and Swift promises she's done taking sh--. "I'm sorry, the old Taylor can't come to the phone right now. Why? Because she's dead," she says in a spoken-word breakdown mid-song. It's a pop song from the former country star, and while it sounds upbeat, the venom is in the lyrics.
Whether the song is directed at Kanye West or his wife Kim Kardashian (the internet connected Swift to the snake emoji after a heated he said/she said game with the couple) or perhaps longtime frenemy Katy Perry is unclear. What is clear is that Swift believes in karma and feels it'll come full circle for those who wronged her. "Maybe I got mine, but you'll all get yours," she sings in a particularly spicy line of the song. The lyric video shows a silhouette of Swift sitting at a desk, keeping her own naughty list of names. It's a list you probably don't want to find yourself on.
Is This Taylor's Greatest Shade Ever?
Post that went up on the superstar's Instagram account just after 11:30PM CT on Thursday night (Aug. 24) teased fans with the title of the single, prompting them to visit her website to pre-order the Reputation album, order merch or learn about tour dates for what's presumably a 2018 run. Swift's last album, 1989, was her first official foray into pop music, and "Look What You Made Me Do" would indicate she plans to stick around the genre a little longer.
Taylor Swift's "Look What You Made Me Do" Lyrics:
"I don't like your little games / Don't like your tilted stage / The role you made me play / Of the fool / No, I don't like you / I don't like your perfect crime / How you laugh when you lie / You said the gun was mine / Isn't cool / No, I don't like you / Ooh / But I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time / Honey, I rose up from the dead / I do it all the time / I got a list of names, and yours is in red, underlined / I check it once, then I check it twice / Ooh, look what you made me do / Look what you made me do / Look what you made me do / Look what you just made me do / Look what you just made me, ooh / Look at what you made me do / Look what you made me do / Look what you just made me do / Look what you just made me do. I don't like your kingdom / Keys, they once belonged to me / You asked me for a place to sleep / Locked me out, then threw a feast / What? / The world moves on, another day, another drama, drama / But not for me, not for me / All I think about is karma / And then the world moves on, but one thing's for sure / Maybe I got mine, but you'll all get yours."
