Wisconsin Driver Crashes Into Deputy While Eating Taco Bell

Is It Illegal to Eat While Driving in Illinois or Wisconsin?

Just so we're clear, neither Illinois nor Wisconsin have a law specifically stating it is illegal to eat while driving, but in certain circumstances, it can be considered distracted driving which is illegal in both states.

I may not have a law degree, but I'm assuming eating something easy like candy, chips or fries behind the wheel wouldn't be considered distracted driving. Eating something messy like a taco, though, that has disaster written all over it.

Wisconsin Woman Rear Ends Sheriff's Deputy While Eating Taco Bell

This story out of Darien, Wisconsin might be a candidate for the "Dueling Dummies" segment we do each weekday morning at 7:45, but that's not fair. This situation could happen to any of us who just can't wait to dig into the Taco Bell we just ordered:

An article from Walworth County Community News says:

 a Walworth County Sheriff’s Office squad car was rear-ended about 11:10 p.m. Tuesday while traveling northbound on I-43 near Hwy X in the Town of Darien.

The deputy was northbound on patrol on I-43 when he saw a vehicle behind him approaching at a high rate of speed.

The deputy was in the right lane, traveling at approximately 60 mph, when the vehicle continued to close the distance.

The deputy tried to accelerate, but that did not prevent the accident.

The vehicle rear-ended him at a high rate of speed.

The 41-year-old female driver did admit to sheriff's deputies that she was eating and not paying attention, and the deputy she hit was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

No charges have been filed at  this time.
