South Main businesses and some residents have had to navigate around barrels and construction signs for more than a year. The Illinois Department of Transportation says it plans to open four lanes, on South Main Street, by Christmas. Here's more.

South Main, the southern half of the project, is waiting on striping before removing many of the barricades that currently line the sides of highway two.

According to WIFR TV-23, Paul Loete of IDOT states, "There's a lot going on behind the scenes. There's a lot of work happening underground that the general public doesn't have a good understanding of because they just can't, quite frankly, see that progress." IDOT says it ran into at least six underground storage tanks during construction and each one of those tanks can delay them one or two months.

Half of the two-part project should be done in the next week, according to IDOT, that will open the street from US 20 until Clifton; Clifton to downtown will open in 2016.

It will be well worth the wait.
