Rockford Public Schools is holding a board meeting today in which 40 local teachers are expected to be fired.

According to WREX, these teacher firings are not the result of district 205 budget cuts, but based solely on the teacher's performance and consist of non-tenured teachers who are currently on probation.

RPS 205 is in the process of adapting a new teacher evaluation system, and the teacher's union, REA, tells WREX that "this is a tough time of year, but that the evaluation system for the district is improving."

Affected teachers have already been notified, and today's meeting only provides final approval from the board.
