Big Plans Revealed for Long-Vacant Rockford Kmart Building
The former Kmart space on E State Street in Rockford has sat vacant since 2019, but it could soon become a massive global food market to rival bigger cities.
Something New For Rockford
I've lived in the Rockford area my entire life, and I hate seeing so many vacant buildings and storefronts throughout this city.
Business closures are becoming a constant theme in Illinois, so I get excited when new businesses decide to call this city home, and I'm really happy to see something brand new is hoping to take over the former Kmart building on E State Street soon.
What Is Global Market and Food Hall?
The first Global Market and Food Hall opened in Madison, Wisconsin in 2020, and for six years it has remained the largest Asian grocery store in the city.
Global Market is far more than just an international grocery store. This business prides itself on offering "incredible food and the finest ingredients", and their vision for the Rockford location is to fill the space with local entrepreneurs offering unique eats and products you won't find anywhere else locally.
When news broke about Global Market and Food Hall possibly opening in Rockford, unsurprisingly, a mix of opinions came with it.
Rockford Residents Speak Out About Global Market and Food Hall
It's no secret that many Rockford residents are resistant to change, and the news about Global Market and Food Hall possibly opening on E State Street has ruffled more than a few feathers.
After reading through the comments on Eyewitness News' post, I discovered a few things very quickly:
- Many people want Kmart to reopen or a Walmart to open in the space.
- Some residents are concerned about the effect Global Market will have on Valli Produce right across the street.
- Other residents are worried about the longevity of an international grocery store in Rockford.
I think the most important thing to remember is this: Nothing is final yet. This deal still depends on financing, inspections, and approvals, but doesn't the possibility of a long-standing empty building in a prime location being revitalized deserve a little excitement? I sure think so!
