Rockford’s 6 Biggest Pedestrian Safety Trouble Spots Revealed
If you have lived in Rockford for any amount of time, there are certain roads that immediately make you grip the steering wheel a little tighter.
I'm talking about the busy intersections you dread navigating every day, or the stretch of road where everyone is driving way too fast.

Personally, I HATE driving through the current construction on Auburn, and I LOATHE getting stuck at the light at Alpine and East State, especially when I need to turn left.
We all have roads that we don't enjoy traveling on in Rockford, but a recent traffic-safety study done by the city has determined some of the most dangerous roads for pedestrians are also the ones Rockford drivers hate the most too.

Rockford's Pedestrian Safety Problem
In 2025, Rockford created the Pedestrian Safety Task Force to look specifically at pedestrian and bicyclist safety, and to figure out what areas need the most improvement throughout the city.
Sadly, the numbers are hard to ignore.
The task force determined that Rockford averages about 22 traffic fatalities each year, with roughly six of those involving pedestrians, which is very concerning.
After reviewing crash data, GIS mapping, corridor conditions, field observations, and community concerns from July 2025 to December 2025, the task force discovered two things quickly: The pedestrian safety problem isn't spread evenly across the city, and certain major roads stand out.

6 Most Dangerous Areas For Pedestrians in Rockford
The whole purpose of Rockford's Pedestrian Safety Action Plan is to give city leaders a roadmap for making improvements to keep pedestrians and bicyclists safe, and the findings say these six areas need the most attention:
1. 11th Street Corridor
This area is one of Rockford's most significant concerns, primarily due to long crossing distances, high pedestrian activity, wide roadways, and high vehicle speeds.
2. Harrison Avenue and South Alpine Intersection
This multi-lane roadway sees high pedestrian traffic and has incomplete sidewalk coverage. Drivers also fail to yield right-of-way often in the area, making conditions even more dangerous for pedestrians.
3. North Central Avenue and Auburn St. Corridor
This commercial corridor frequently sees drivers making turns and has incomplete sidewalk connections.
4. East State Street and North Alpine Intersection
This intersection sees a lot of traffic and has an "incomplete pedestrian network and crosswalks with markings."
5. North Perryville Rd. & North Bell School Rd. Intersection
This area is one of Rockford's busiest commercial corridors with wide roadways and incomplete sidewalk coverage.
6. East State Street in Downtown Rockford
Downtown Rockford sees a lot of pedestrian activity and the study found that upgraded crosswalks and traffic signal timing is needed in this area.

Ways to Improve Rockford's Pedestrian Safety Problem
Rockford's Pedestrian Safety Task Force found that safety issues aren't simply caused by drivers traveling too fast or ignoring traffic rules.
Many of the issues involve lack of sidewalks and safe places to cross the road. Visibility concerns and clearly marked crosswalks are also part of the problem, and are improvements the City of Rockford will be addressing soon. In fact, work is already happening in some of these areas.
As someone who has spent my entire life driving around Rockford, I think most of us have roads where we automatically slow down or pay a little more attention, and if you don't, please start doing so immediately.
