It's no secret that the flu and cold season has hit the Rockford area hard, and now the widespread illness is affecting much more than our individual lives.

The Rock River Valley Blood Center is reporting critically low levels of all blood types, and according to WIFR, they may have to look at importing blood from different areas if donations don't start coming in.

The problem however, is that Rockford isn't the only community that is plagued by illnesses right now. With cold and flu cases on the rise and bad weather conditions all over this country, blood donation levels are in serious trouble nationwide.

If you are healthy, and have not been exposed to anyone with the flu recently, PLEASE take less than an hour out of your day to donate blood as soon as possible. You can schedule an appointment right now at rrvbc.org or call 815-965-8751.

The RRVBC website also states that there is a desperate need for platelet donors as well so please roll up those sleeves and give what you can.

One last thing, if you're currently under the weather and can't donate today, mark Saturday, February 10th on your calendar now. That's the date for our annual "Straight From The Heart Blood Drive" with the Rock River Valley Blood Center at the Lou Bachrodt Automall, and we'll really need your help to save hundreds of lives that day. Keep listening for more details, because we can't wait to see you soon!
