What happened to the classic Halloween candies?

This Halloween candy map feels like it's filled with candies I never would expect to be on somebody's favorite list. But I guess to each their own!

If I had to pick my favorite candy to get in my Halloween trick-or-treat bag, I'd probably say Dots. I got SO excited when I saw that little yellow box in my candy bag.

Zippia just revealed each state's favorite Halloween candy for 2021.

So, let's take a look at the map, then we need to have a discussion.

Air Heads? Really?

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Air Heads. But I didn't even think they'd be on the list. Here's some other answers that I was surprised to see on the map -

  • Circus Peanuts
  • Runts
  • Dum Dums
  • Smarties

Like I said before, I like all of these things a lot. But I don't think I would ever say they're my favorite. Especially not when it comes to Halloween candy.

So how did Zippia determine the favorites?

Using Google Trends, we determined which states were the most avid fans of each candy. We examined 50 different popular (and some infamously unpopular) candies, given us a range of candies that puts any grocery store shelf to shame.

Check out this though -

We, being sane reasonable humans, excluded gum from our candy list. Gum isn’t a candy. Similarly, we excluded raisins, fruit snacks, and other things people try and pass off as candy to unfortunate trick-or-treaters. There is a reason some houses get egged on Halloween and it’s because they aren’t giving out treats.
